The Florida Peninsula has served as a “safe” ground for many Cuban migrants—a seemingly borderless land where new silhouettes are drawn to decipher other realities. Those who remain behind also harbor the dream of altering the accursed circumstances of islanders—of shifting horizons and expanding borders. In this design, I interpret the United States flag and the seven-pointed crown of the Statue of Liberty to allude to the great waves of migration, while simultaneously emphasizing the hydraulic tile—a common, trivial object found in many of the homes and spaces abandoned by those who emigrate. It is a dialogue between the local and the territorial, the known and the unknown, the inhabited and the uninhabited.
