Antonio Gómez Margolles
Antonio Gómez Margolles (Havana, 1972) is a prominent Cuban visual artist and professor at the Faculty of Visual Arts of the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA) in Havana, the same institution where he studied from 1992 to 1999, following his training at the “20 de Octubre” Elementary School of Visual Arts, beginning in 1987. His academic and creative career has been marked by intensive teaching activity and a sustained artistic production spanning over three decades.
Since the early 1990s, he has held numerous solo exhibitions, including A Place to Call My Own (2023), an anthology showcasing works from 1997 to 2022 at the Center for the Development of Visual Arts, as well as solo shows at major galleries in Havana, the Canary Islands, and New Zealand. Among his early exhibitions are The Present Structure (1992) and Await a Miracle (1998), which already reflected a reflective and experimental vocation.
In parallel, his participation in group exhibitions has been constant both in Cuba and internationally. He has taken part in events linked to various editions of the Havana Biennial and exhibited at important venues such as the Wifredo Lam Contemporary Art Center, Galería Habana, and the National Museum of Fine Arts. His work has also been shown in cities like Milan, Palermo, Shanghai, and Oswego, underscoring the international reach of his artistic practice.
Gómez Margolles has been invited to artist residency programs at prestigious institutions, including the Contemporary Art Museum at the University of South Florida (USA) and the MIRÓ Gallery in Berlin–Prague–Bratislava, where he resided in 1999. These experiences have enriched his artistic discourse and helped consolidate a visual poetics engaged with the tensions of context and memory.
His work is part of private and public collections in Cuba, Spain, France, Mexico, the United States, Germany, and New Zealand, reflecting the broad impact and favorable reception of his artistic vision. The artist has also contributed to the organization of exhibition spaces and curatorial initiatives, as part of his pedagogical vocation and deep engagement with Cuba’s contemporary cultural landscape.
Antonio Gómez Margolles has established himself as an active and significant figure in the Cuban art scene. His work is characterized by a continuous exploration of territory, identity, and social processes, using diverse media and visual languages. As both creator and educator, he has made a meaningful contribution to critical thinking in contemporary Cuban art.
