Alejandro Baró
Alejandro Vega Baró (Matanzas, Cuba, 1997) is a Cuban visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice moves between painting, drawing, photography, and writing. Living and working between Havana and Matanzas, his work explores historical memory, postcolonial discourse, and contemporary cultural dynamics through a critical and deeply personal perspective. He graduated in Easel Painting Restoration from the University of the Arts (ISA) in Havana and has also pursued studies in lithography, photography, and paper conservation. Since 2018, his work has been part of the permanent collection of the RISD Museum.
Baró’s artistic career includes significant solo exhibitions such as Universal History (Galería La Nave, 2024), Maktub (Galería Pedro Esquerré, 2023), and Infinite City (Galería Wifredo Lam, 2019). His work has also been consistently featured in collective exhibitions in Cuba and internationally, including projects associated with the Havana Biennial, Fábrica de Arte Cubano, and galleries in Germany, among other cultural institutions. Alongside his artistic production, he has developed an active career in teaching, curatorial practice, and art criticism through collaborations with institutions such as the Ludwig Foundation of Cuba and the Professional School of Arts of Matanzas.
The work of Alejandro Baró is distinguished by the use of collage, Chinese ink, archival imagery, and mixed media to construct a critical visual language centered on history, structural racism, colonial legacies, and contemporary cultural tensions. His practice engages with universal references drawn from art history, philosophy, religion, and politics, articulating a discourse that bridges personal experience with broader postcolonial narratives. Throughout his career, Baró has received awards and recognitions in several contemporary art salons, while his works are held in important public and private collections across Cuba, the United States, and Spain.
