Javier Barreiro
Graduated from the San Alejandro Academy of Fine Arts and holding a degree in Social Communication from the University of Havana, Javier Barreiro has explored a wide range of genres within the visual arts. His work spans video art, installation, public interventions, printmaking, drawing, and painting, the latter being his most current and expressive medium.
In the early stages of his career, Barreiro participated in significant video art events such as the International Video Art Festival of Camagüey (FIVAC) in 2012 and 2013, the ICAIC Young Filmmakers Exhibition in 2011 and 2013, and the Digital Art Salon and Colloquium in 2011, organized by the Pablo de la Torriente Brau Center in Havana.
As his focus shifted more toward painting, Barreiro took part in the Salon of the City, a major event in Havana dedicated to emerging art. He received awards in 2016 and again in 2022, when he won the 1st Prize of the event.
Barreiro has participated in over 40 group exhibitions and held 11 solo shows. Among his most notable exhibitions are "Creer o no creer" (2022) at the Provincial Center of Visual Arts and Design in Havana and "Inmensa minoría" (2024) at La Mansión Castillo, also in Havana.
His works are included in private collections worldwide, with notable representation in Spain, the Netherlands, Portugal, France, the United States, Canada, and China. His art has been featured in prestigious publications such as C de Cuba(Spain), Artepoli (Spain), and On Cuba News (Cuba).
The evolution of Barreiro’s painting over the past years is documented in the upcoming book "Pintura Cubana I, Selección de maestros y alumnos," scheduled for release in September of this year.
