Regarding: Karla Betancourt - Submerged desert (reefs)
Artwork Statement
This work seeks to reflect a current yet little-known environmental issue: the death of coral reefs. When alive, these structures harbor the greatest number of organisms on the planet; however, due to global warming and rising sea temperatures, they are dying—a process made evident as they lose their color and turn white. The result of this phenomenon is an underwater desert that nonetheless remains strikingly beautiful, revealing the majesty of nature’s ability to create a vast array of living forms. Through beadwork, I have recreated plant-like motifs and the textures of water—its foam and reflections—in an attempt to breathe life into these marine skeletons.
