The Force / La Fuerza
The Force tells the story of a couple who spent their entire lives together in 1980s Cuba, building a family amidst a revolutionary fervor. He was a colonel, but Parkinson’s disease consumed him for over 20 years, leading to his retirement and gradually deteriorating his body and mind until his passing. She was always by his side, even when support faded, facing emotional pain and exhaustion, carrying the weight of a prolonged grief.
The photograph captures a moment just before his departure, showing his vulnerability and the strength that arises from love and compassion. It’s not physical strength, but inner resilience—the trust and care that sustain family bonds. The image reflects the memory of elders, of pain, death, and farewell, but also of love that drives us to care for others regardless of circumstances. Family ties transcend time and distance, adapting and growing stronger as each member develops.
