    Artwork Statement

"Subjects (Coming to Reason)" delves into the deep-seated tension between intellectual freedom and ideological subjugation. The piece centers around a striking hybrid object: an apple transformed into a jingle bell. By doing so, Jota seamlessly fuses two potent cultural symbols. On one hand, the forbidden fruit of Genesis stands as an emblem of knowledge, self-awareness, and human reason. On the other, the bell references the classic fable "Belling the Cat" (El congreso de las ratas), a timeless allegory representing unattainable paradigms, systemic traps, and the paralysis of collective action.

The sculpture sets up an internal parallelism that exposes the overlapping relationship between two dominant structures of control: the religious and the political. Defying the convention of the sculpture as a static, passive object, this piece establishes a direct, tactile interaction with the viewer. When shaken, it breaks its silence to emit a distinct sound born from the physical properties of its raw patinated bronze and the metal ball striking within its core.

Through this sensory engagement, the artwork prompts a profound realization: it reminds the handler that knowledge and reason are not merely decorative, but resonant tools meant to be activated against the structures that attempt to silence them.
