Pilgrimage to a Living Past / Peregrinación hacia un pasado vivo
The project originated from a barefoot walk I took through the backstreets of Minas—a sensory immersion into the reality of a town that, like so many others in Cuba and around the world, struggles to redefine its identity after losing its original purpose. Matahambre, with its silent streets and its people, appeared to me as a microcosm of our national reality: a place where faith and purpose seem to have faded.
Through this pilgrimage, I sealed a metaphorical commitment to Matahambre and its inhabitants. Through my art, I set out to excavate the layers of memory embedded in this place, seeking to reveal how contemporary art can serve as a vehicle for salvation and communication for communities in transition.
