With a refined minimalism reminiscent of Asian art, Alexandra Álvarez Carvajal explores themes of survival and transformation in her digital series Pez sin Cola. Her work reimagines the resilience of animals capable of sacrificing parts of their bodies to escape captivity—like the severed tail of a lizard—only here, the creatures are fish.

This series presents mutilated yet liberated beings, a tribute to the enduring spirit that prioritizes freedom over physical wholeness. The floating, turgid tails become evocative symbols of resilience and autonomy.

However, Álvarez Carvajal’s vision does not dwell on suffering. The graceful composition and subtle visual harmonyshift the focus away from pain and toward a sense of peace after struggle. In many of the works, delicate flowers, leaves, and branches—echoing traditional Oriental aesthetics—shape a scene that is both serene and subtly sensual.

Resurrection or resignation? That remains the lingering question.
