TUMBAO- FOTOGRAFÍA CONTEMPORÁNEA MATANCERA

Within the framework of Noviembre Fotográfico in Cuba, “Tumbao. Contemporary Photography from Matanzas”emerges as an exhibition that serves as a pretext for reflection on the complex context experienced by Cubans living on the island since the late twentieth century.
Matanzas photography—widely recognized for its strong social and documentary character—has found in the artistic circuit a legitimate space to express its concerns and creative vitality. On this occasion, both emerging and established artists converge to establish a dialogue between past and present, where different realities, though separated by time, reveal striking similarities.
A paradigmatic example of this continuity is the series “Convivencias” (1988) by Ramón Pacheco Salazar (Villa Clara, 1954), a symbolic radiography of Cuban identity that transcends provincial boundaries to express a profoundly national vision. In this body of work, Pacheco captures a web of human experiences that, far from disappearing, continue to resonate as a persistent echo of Cuba’s social and cultural evolution.
This exhibition underscores how photography—particularly that produced in Matanzas—embodies the critical and sensitive gaze of those who, through the lens, transform reality into visual memory and an expression of collective consciousness.
