Yusber Quian – EIGENGRAU
Quián’s work takes creative liberties in its exploration of the color grey, a concept that underpins the Eigengrau project. The term “Eigen” translates to “proper,” while “grau” means grey. It refers to the dark shade perceived by most people when they close their eyes. In Yusber’s own words, it is the first color we see at the beginning of life, and it will also be the last. This is the true hue of darkness, accompanied by fleeting flashes—a hallucination of the human mind, particularly in its desire to imagine in the face of uncertainty.
Abstraction is undoubtedly intertwined with these ideas, forging an intimate connection with the artist. The sensory impact of abstraction becomes a medium for Quián, a metaphor used to conceal ideas from his earlier figurative work. By emphasizing these experiences through abstraction and distancing them from the mere imitation or reproduction of nature, he invites us to perceive the world as something beyond ourselves.
