In Visages, portraiture is conceived as an especially expansive field of representation. On one hand, it brings together the physical features that define presence; on the other, it opens the possibility of suggesting a singular psychological expression—character, sensitivity, and inner world. Yet portraiture extends far beyond any narrow understanding limited to the face or direct likeness. It emerges through diverse artistic languages, from painting and sculpture to photography, drawing, printmaking, and even installation or performance-based practices, taking on multiple forms. For this reason, it encompasses subgenres such as group portraiture and self-portraiture, as well as less obvious approaches in which identity is constructed through suggestion. Even the image of a back may be understood as a portrait when it succeeds in condensing the sensitive trace of an individual. From this perspective, Visages evokes a space of conceptual associations where portraiture intersects with memory, intimacy, desire, and eroticism. Bringing together works by Cuban artists Carlos Quintana, Adriana Mugía, Luis Miguel Rivero, Alejandro Gómez Cangas, and Pedro Pablo Oliva, the exhibition expands the language of portraiture within contemporary Cuban art.
